Wednesday 7-31

The night before we left Alamosa this rainbow appeared after a storm, this was shot from inside the camper.

Today we got up to clear skies and rode the Cog RR to the top of Pikes Peak. It was an hour and a half ride one way. It is a slow and relaxing ride with beautiful views. At the top we had their famous donuts, still warm then took in the views. Karen and I did OK at 14,110 feet but had to walk very slow and drink lots of water to offset the effects of the high altitude.

We stopped for another train headed down to pass

This critter was drinking water pooled on a rock

Here comes the other train

Almost to the top

The plaque on the face were the words to "America the Beautiful"

Tuesday 7-30

We had another beautiful travel day to Colorado Springs. We were set to be home on August 6 but it will be on the 8th now. We are going to stop in Elkhart, IN to get some needed service done on the trailer. They were good enough to schedule us in on our way home.

Monday 7-29

We got up this morning to fog and temperature of 48, so we decided to do laundry and catch up with internet stuff. The Wi-Fi at the camper is poor so I took the computer to the laundry room and had good service to up load photos and post. The sun came out later and we just hung around camp, I cleaned bugs and road stuff off the truck while Karen figured out where we were on our budget. High winds so we put the awning up and prepped for Tuesday’s journey to Colorado Springs.

Sunday 7-28

It rained last night and was sprinkling this morning. After breakfast the sun shone through our stained glass window and the sky started to clear so we headed for the Great Sand Dunes. As we got closer the mountain behind the dunes was cloudy and no sun getting in. We went into the visitor center and took photos of the beautiful stained glass mural. We decided to take a hike on the dunes even though it was still overcast. The hike was only a one half mile to the first dune and we stopped there for a while then headed back to take the 4x4 trail road. Well we did not get very far and met another truck coming out and they had gotten to a sign that said “Point of No Return” and lower the tire pressure to 20 psi. That was not going to happen so we turned around.

We headed for San Luis and the Shrine of the Stations of the Cross. Wow, this was worth the journey. The three quarter mile trail up a small mesa was lined with a series of bronze sculptures of Christ’s journey to the cross and resurrection. At the top is the chapel, La Capilla de Todos Los Santos (The Chapel of All saints). Below lies the village and valley. This walk gives you an opportunity for meditation or reflection.

Each station told what it was with scripture next to it.

There are 12 stations, these are samples.

This one shows how much Christ suffered for us!

Saturday 7-27

What a beautiful day to travel with blue skies and good roads traveling towards the mountains. We soon started up the pass eight miles up from about 7,000 feet to 10,900 feet to the Great Divide where we had lunch and enjoyed the view. After we setup the trailer, we visited the Great Sand Dunes National Park visitor center to get info for the next day’s visit. Temperature was cool so we turned the heat on in the trailer.
