We finished our morning travel in Iowa and started crossing
Nebraska with cloudy skies and a constant wind at our back. There were a few
drops of rain but mostly just cloudy. Along our way we stopped to see the “The Great
Platte River Road Archway Monument” at Kearney, NE which was built over I-80. It
was an interesting structure and museum about the Great Plains culture.
Radar checking the speed of the traffic below the arch!
I loved the hammer and nails!
After we arrived at
our campground at North Platte, NE we visited the “Golden Spike Tower” Union
Pacific’s Bailey Yard, the world’s largest train yard. 10,000 cars are handled
each day on 2,850 acres of land stretching eight miles. There was a very
informative display and view of the yard from the seventh and eighth floor of
the tower. The seventh floor was an open air 360o observation area,
very cool!
We then went to a local restaurant “Whisky Creek Wood Fire
Grill” for dinner. They had shelled peanuts on the table and shells all over
the floor. Other than the fact that the air-conditioning was set way to low and
we were freezing but the food was good.
